Blessing and groundbreaking for historic church expansion
One of Traverse City's oldest catholic churches, St. Joseph's is expanding on Old Mission Peninsula. Dozens of community members came out for a special blessing and ground breaking for Saint Joseph's new building on Saturday evening.
St. Joseph's church was founded back in the 1800â??s and the church on Center Road was built back in 1908.
As the years went by more and more people joined the church, which created the need for a bigger building.
Over the past two years the church has raised $2.2 million dollars for an expansion project. The project will consist of moving the current church building about one mile south and then expanding the original structure.
The expansion will allow nearly 100 more people to fit inside the church for mass.
Church officials plan to start construction on the new building in mid-July and hope to have the whole project done by Christmas.
