It is just about the fourth of June, and that means it's time to call your Buddy and remind her to do her self breast exam. As part of this month's Buddy Check report, a group of lovely ladies in Leelanau County are doing their part to assist families battling cancer.
Volunteers are busy setting up eighteen different tables decorated with fine linens, and the most beautiful china and silver for the La-Tea-Da high tea fundraiser to enhance the Leelanau Cancer Fund.
Money raised at the fancy event will go to Leelanau families who need assistance with ordinary, basic needs while their loved ones are fighting cancer. Over 75 families have already been helped and every bit counts.
Committee member and co-chairperson Diane Pare' says helping families can be as simple as a haircut or gas cards. And many other board members and volunteers were inspired to work on the tea because they know first hand the struggles that can go along with a cancer battle.
"The biggest part is they are cancer survivors so they've been through it, they want to help," Pare' said.
In the past three years, $60,000 was raised and by partnering with the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, organizers hope even more families can be helped.
La-TEA-Da will be at 2 PM on Thursday, June 20th at Black Star Farms. Only a few tickets remain but those interested, or those who would like to volunteer may contact Diane Pare' at (231) 271-2030 or Marti Paquette at (231) 256-7364
