Budget plan focuses on fight against invasive species

Gov. Rick Snyder will propose spending $14 million over the next two years in a stepped-up fight to prevent more invasive species from getting into Michigan.
Department of Natural Resources Director Keith Creagh tells The Associated Press that the plan is included in the 2015-16 budget the governor plans to release Wednesday.
The plan calls for adding about 16 positions in three state departments. The positions would handle tasks such as inspecting ports and responding to citizen reports of possible invasive species sightings in an effort to contain them before they spread.
Creagh says one goal is to have a more holistic approach to detection and control, instead of the previous policy of focusing on one species at a time. Other goals include better cooperation with local governments and organizations.
