A controversial plan to create more slips for yachts in the Charlevoix City Marina is moving into the next phase.
The Charlevoix City Council voted 4 to 3 Tuesday to approve the plan to add seven 80-foot slips.
The expansion project is now in the permitting stage which includes sending the proposal to the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources and Army Corps of Engineers.
The Downtown Development Authority and the City Planning Commission support the project, but residents have voiced concern. The issues of concern discussed during the public hearing stage included safety issues with increased congestion on Round Lake and the impact to the environment.
The expansion plan is expected to cost $500,000.
