Commission considers adding dog park at Civic Center

If the board decides to move forward with the idea of adding a dog park, the Business Development Team will begin researching and figuring out the costs.

The Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Commission is discussing the addition of a dog park at the Civic Center.

If the board decides to move forward with the idea, the Business Development Team will begin researching and figuring out costs of putting in a dog park.

Commissioner Alisa Kroupa said Garfield Township and the City of Traverse City both have dog parks and they have been great for the community.

"Ultimately it's our County Civic Center. It should offer something for everybody. It's got ice-skating, and baseball, and swimming, and a great running track and basketball courts, said Alisa Kroupa, Grand Traverse County Commissioner. What we'd like to see is rounding that out. What are citizens interested in? A dog park is something that you can do relatively easily."

The board will also be discussing a replacement playground since Kids Kove was closed last September after elevated levels of arsenic were found in the soil.

Kroupa said once a spot for the new playground is decided on, the board will begin a large scale fundraising effort.
