A new system that will use organic waste to produce energy at Michigan State University is scheduled to go online Tuesday.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the start-up for the South Campus Anaerobic Digester. It's located at the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research facility, just south of the main campus.
An anaerobic digester is a sealed, oxygen-free tank in which organic waste is degraded at an elevated temperature. That causes the waste material to decompose quickly and produce methane that can be captured and used as fuel.
The digester will use about 17,000 tons of waste from university farms and dining halls to generate 2.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, generating power for a number of campus buildings.
