UPDATE: The Glen Lake Township board has called a special meeting to discuss the marina's expansion plans tomorrow at 2:00p.m. We will have more on this story tonight on 7&4 News at 6.
A local marina is asking the state for permission to expand.
On The Narrows Marina on Glen Lake in Leelanau County filed a permit with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality on January 11th to build an additional 39 boat slips and four moorings.
Conor McCahill, owner of the marina, says "Every year since we've operated we've had to turn away local residents seeking lake access which we currently can't accommodate."
McCahill says he would be able to hire additional employees for the summer if the expansion is approved.
Some residents, like Kathy Schmid, who own a home on the lake are worried peaceful summers currently enjoyed on Glen Lake will turn into a crowded party atmosphere with the expansion.
Schmid is also worried the area will not be able to accomodate extra parking or restrooms that could be needed for an influx of visitors.
Glen Lake Township Supervisor John Soderholm says he was never notified about the expansion, and just learned of the plans Tuesday. He is also worried about the lack of parking and restrooms in the area.
A public notice period expires on January 31st, and then it is up to the MDEQ to make a final decision.
