Good Samaritan hit by car while trying to help stranded driver
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's department reports that a 56-year-old Williamsburg man was injured while trying to help another motorist Wednesday on U.S. 131 near Elliott Road.
The man, who has been identified as Scott Timothy Peterson, had stopped to help another driver who had slid off of the icy road into a ditch. The man was stopped on the southbound shoulder and was hooking a tow strap to the stuck vehicle when a northbound Honda driven by Cheryl Ann Fonfara, 63, of Riverside, Ill., also lost control.
The Honda crossed the center line, went off the roadway and then hit Peterson's pickup truck which pushed it into him leaving him pinned between his own pickup truck and the vehicle he was attempting to help.
After this crash the Honda re-entered the roadway and drove into another vehicle.
Both drivers were taken to Munson Medical Center with what officials believe to be non-life threatening injuries and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
The report will now go to the Prosecutor's Office where it will determined whether or not charges will be filed. It is possible that there will be a citation issued for moving violation causing serious injury.
