Dozens gathered in Northport Thursday night to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new family-fun center - Tucker's!
The evening included a groundbreaking ceremony on site, followed by a celebration with food and drinks for all in attendance.
Tucker's will feature a six-lane bowling alley, a restaurant, bar, music venue, and small arcade - and is located right at the heart of downtown.
Designers emphasize that the architecture of the building draws on the peninsula's nautical background, will have stonework characteristic of Northern Michigan, and will be decorated inside to reflect Leelanau County. The front of the building will also coincide with the other buildings in town by emulating the western store front theme.
"The way that people have sort of embraced the idea and encouraged us - it gives us a great sense of accomplishment and it makes us feel very much a part of the community, and that we can really sort of effect the attitude of the community," said Ben Walraven, a partner in the project. "That's actually the greatest thing that we're looking forward to."
Organizers say they expect the building process to take 6 to 8 months, and hope it will be a fun escape from the winter cold.
