Mancelona high school is celebrating the accomplishments of its boys varsity basketball team. But this celebration isn't about the athletes performance on the court, rather their hard work and incredible accomplishments in the classroom.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association recently announced that the 2011-2012 Mancelona High School basketball team received All State Honors for having the highest cumulative GPA in the entire state, an average of 3.75.
Wednesday, each school in the district took time out of the day to honor the team hoping to stress to the younger students, just how big of an achievement this is. Mancelona High School Principal Joe Clark says, "Academics is why were here, that's the number one most important thing they should be looking at. They're going to be using math, science, and English everyday in their lives. But basketball baseball football, and track, they're all wonderful but most students are not going to make a living doing that. They're going to make a living using all of the skills they've learned in classroom."
Mancelona High School Basketball Coach Rick Duerksen says "This group of young men has set the bar high for Mancelona. I hope this is something that catches and kids look at this as something that's worth striving for. I hope that they try to achieve to be excellent not only in academics but in whatever they do..."
