The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has awarded $737,720 in wildlife habitat grants to conservation and nonprofit groups, landowners and government agencies.

Among the 16 recipients are the Conservation Resource Alliance in Benzie and Grand Traverse counties; Pheasants Forever Inc. in Lenawee County; the Superior Watershed Partnership in Luce and Alger counties and the Huron-Manistee National Forests Baldwin Ranger District in Newaygo and Oceana counties.

Examples of funded projects include planting native grasslands for pheasant habitat at Lake Hudson State Recreation Area; planting fruit trees for wild turkey and ruffed grouse food sources in several places; and improving accessibility for limited-mobility hunters and wildlife enthusiasts at Sharonville State Game Area.

The grant program is funded with revenue from hunting and fishing license sales.
