Island church recognized as historic site

Holy Cross Church on Beaver Island will soon be getting a historical marker.

A church on Beaver Island is getting statewide recognition.

The Michigan Historical Commission has approved historical markers for four sites, including the Holy Cross Church on Beaver Island.

The markers were approved last week during a meeting where officials celebrated the commission's 100th anniversary.

The additional sites include recognition for the work of Hendrik and Fred Meijer, who started the Meijer retail chain in Grand Rapids, Duane Doty School in Wayne County, which opened in 1909 to serve Detroit's then-growing population and the Indian Lake Cemetery in Cass County, which has been in use since the 1840s.

They're among more than 1,700 Michigan historical markers.
