LSSU releases 39th annual list of banished words and phrases

The word-watchers at Lake Superior State University have released their List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness for the 39th year.

The word-watchers at Lake Superior State University have released their List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness for the 39th year.

This set of words is compiled over the year through nominations to LSSU. It is then released every year on New Year's Eve. This fun, whimsical list dates back to 1975 when some school colleagues decided to make a list of words to banish, and the idea appealed to word enthusiasts everywhere.

For a full list of the words, visit the university's website.

Some of the words include "selfie," "twerk," and "hashtag."
