Staff at Munson Medical Center were forced to take care of one of their own this weekend. A bad car accident put an emergency room nurse and her husband in the ER, and left their baby in critical condition.
The crash happened Saturday morning in Osceola County. Becky and Travis Baker were taken to Munson Medical Center, but their 4-month-old daughter Lilah had to be taken to DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Becky is a RN at Munson's Emergency Department who has taken care of trauma patients.
Since the crash, community members have been raising money through an online website for the family, that was created by some of Becky's co-workers. They have already raised more than $10-thousand.
Some of Becky's friends who are also co-workers had to treat her and her husband when they came in through the Emergency Department. Staff who worked on them say while it can be difficult to not let emotions get involved, they treated them the same as they would any of their patients.
"It is definitely somewhat of a different situation when it's someone that you know but the way that we are trained to do our jobs, we do exactly the same thing every time," said Langley Scherer, a PA in Munson's Trauma Service. "I think after the initial events, and the patients are stabilized then you start to realize, "Oh gosh, that's a good friend of ours," and the social aspects start to come in to play but when they come in through the ambulance, really everybody gets treated exactly the same."
Becky was released from the hospital. Travis is still there but is listed in fair condition.
According to staff members at DeVos Children's Hospital, 4-month-old Lilah is still in critical condition.
The family's dog, Zuno, was pronounced dead at the scene of the car crash.
