Eleven grants will help the fight against invasive species in the Great Lakes.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grants Tuesday. The awards total more than $5 million.
â??These Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grants will be used to target aquatic and terrestrial invasive species in the Great Lakes basin,â?? said Great Lakes National Program Manager Susan Hedman. â??The projects will also help to prevent the introduction of new invasive species that pose risks to the Great Lakes ecosystem.â??
Since the GLRI was launched in 2010, the EPA has funded more than 70 projects totaling over $40 million to combat invasive species. The inititative includes a task force of 11 federal agencies, which developed an action plan to protect the Great Lakes.
