"We're going to learn a little bit about ramps," said Chef Phil Murray, Owner of Phil's on Front in Traverse City. "They're also called wild leeks."
Phil is helping you create some of his favorite dishes in your own kitchen every week on UpNorthLive Tonight on ABC 29&8 at 6:30 p.m.
Ramps, or leeks, are wild onions native to North America. In many areas, they're considered a Spring delicacy.
"They are usually next to Trilliums," said Phil. "If you see Trilliums, you'll see a lot of ramps."
This week Phil is sharing his Grilled Romaine & Ramps recipe:
Fresh romaine lettuce
Salt and pepper to taste
Cut up ramps and poach in water for about 30 seconds. Drain, then marinate in salt and pepper, olive oil, and a little bit of champagne vinegar. Set that aside, and get your fresh romaine lettuce. Put olive oil on romaine and sprinkle salt and pepper on top. Rub it into the romaine. Next, put romaine on heated grill.
"It usually takes about 35 to 40 seconds on each side," said Phil. "It really makes a nice flavor when the outside is warm and crusty and the inside is cold and crunchy."
When done grilling, place onto plate and put ramps on top. Easy as that!
"Bon Appetite," said Phil. "How healthy can you possibly get? This is like, healthy, healthy, healthy, healthy, HEALTHY!"
