Horse owners Jim and Cheryl Brandt got a big surprise last Friday night in Manton. Their mare Cherokee was ready to have her foal, but it turns out she was ready to have twins!
It is very rare for a mare to have twin foals and even more rare for them both to survive. The survival rate of twin foals is as high as 1 in 100,000.
But new filly Ziva and colt Luke are doing well and are celebrating being one week old today. Their veterinarian suggested the Brandts watch the foals closely for the first few weeks since twins tend to have higher risk of health problems.
It was a surprising and exciting day in the barn but the Brandts are happy to welcome the new foals to their family.
