Small Business Saturday brings big business to Traverse City

Small Business Saturday is a big day for downtown Traverse City. Hundreds of shoppers were downtown to support local businesses.

The end of Black Friday didn't mean the end of great shopping deals, as Small Business Saturday took over downtown Traverse City.

The annual event was started by American Express in 2010 and it encourages people to shop at small local businesses in order to keep the money that people spend directly in the community.

Many downtown Traverse City shops extended Black Friday deals to Saturday, making for busy sidewalks and stores. Local bookstores Horizon Books and Brilliant Books brought in area authors to talk to shoppers and help out at the store.

Some shoppers prefer the experience of downtown specialty shopping compared to the big box craze of Black Friday.

"Coming down here and supporting all the local folks is the way to go," shopper John Bequette said.

Local business owners love the feeling of community it brings and the financial impact it can have.

"This is going to be one of our busiest days of the year," Brilliant Books Owner Peter Makin said. "This, yesterday was really big, and Christmas Eve are probably our three biggest days."
