SunDog Kennel hosts collection drive for military working dogs

The Military Working Dog Team Support Association shows support for both military working dogs and their handlers.

SunDog Boarding Kennel in Leelanau County is hoping to give military working dogs and their handlers overseas some comforts of home this spring with a care package collection drive.

SunDog is collecting everything from grooming products to monetary donations. The care packages will have a Northern Michigan theme, with a focus on cherries, fishing, and the Great Lakes.

The drive is being done through the Military Working Dog Team Support Association, which sends more than 130 care packages overseas each quarter of the year.

Donations can be dropped off at: SunDog Boarding Kennel, Cherry Capital Subaru, Dog Bakery, Bay Area Pet Hospital, Northern Michigan Veterinary Hospital, and Bowsers By The Bay.

SunDog Kennel owner Allison Merrill believes that it's important to show your support for both the humans and canines serving overseas.

"There's a lot of nonprofits and groups out there that send packages to just the handlers, and we're one of the few that actually send the packages to the dogs as well," said Merrill. "So, that's a really big hit to me because I get letters, and cards, and emails, and sometimes a phone call, even, from the handler thanking me personally, and we also include in each box a list of all the donors, so that way the handlers can see how many people support them and their dogs."
