Traverse City Area Public School bus drivers spent their Thursday gearing up for the start of school.
Drivers attended an orientation program designed to get the drivers up to speed on safety issues both on the bus and on the road.
The day started off with fire drill demonstrations. Trainers filled the buses with smoke and had the driver go through the process of getting the kids off the bus.
Drivers were also asked to complete a driving test, an obstacle course, as well as watch a safety video.
Operations officials say the orientation is a good refresher for drivers after the long summer.
"It's really important for our drivers who most of them don't drive a school bus most of the summer." says Interim Executive Director of Operations, Christine Thomas. "To get back in the school bus gets them more comfortable with it again since they haven't driven for a couple of months and just kind of refresh their memory and get them comfortable with the bus."
Drivers will finish their safety orientation course Friday afternoon.
