Third graders show appreciation to veterans with school assembly
The 3rd grade students at Eastern Elementary School in Traverse City held a Veterans Appreciation Assembly today as part of their Heroes In Our Community service project. This past March, the students got the chance to interview 19 local veterans about their time in various American wars. This assembly was a chance to say thank you to them and also to present them with a DVD of their interview.
The interviews will be preserved in a bigger way by becoming a part of the permanent national Veteran's History Project collection in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Students also had the chance to sing and give the vets paintings they made to honor them.
The Heroes In Our Community program is meant to teach students about social issues and civic responsibility and to give them the opportunity to have an impact of their own community.
