Traverse City hosts first cross-country skiing race of season
America's first cross-country skiing race of the winter season took place on Saturday in Traverse City.
Brick Wheels hosted the 4th Annual Nordic Ski Fest, featuring head-to-head races and snow bikers.
Ice shavings from the Zamboni at Howe Arena provided almost 50,000 pounds of snow that was transported to the course by a refrigerated truck.
Race organizer, Eli Brown, and a team of volunteers worked for more than a week to prepare the course.
"My back started to get sore, my legs," said Brown. "We've been going 8 a.m. to midnight for eight days. Volunteers, almost 30 of them here and there."
Participants from all over the state come to compete in the races. Organizers say that the money raised from ticket sales and donations goes to benefit the local junior ski program.
