Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. The only treatments at this time are insulin or pancreas/Islet cell transplants. In addition, type 1 diabetes can be diagnosed at any age, but is the most common type of diabetes diagnosed in children.
That's why "Walking to Cure Diabetes" takes places every year in cities across the country. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, the largest, nonprofit funder for type 1 diabetes research worldwide sponsors the walk. In Traverse City, the walk kicks off, Saturday, September 2nd at Sunset Park at 9:30 a.m. It is a two mile, up and back walk along the bay.
