Woofers on the Run celebrated its first birthday on Saturday with a dog party outside of the Grand Traverse Civic Center.
Woofers on the Run is a local dog running, walking, and pet sitting business. It also held the party as a celebration of National Walk Your Dog Month.
The day included dog and people cake, party favors, music, and one mile group dog walk.
The event also accepted gifts and donations for Stiggy's Dogs, a nonprofit out of Howell, Mich., that transforms shelter dogs into psychiatric service dogs for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or traumatic brain injury.
Quite a few people braved Saturday's rough winter weather for the party, which Woofers on the Run Owner/Dog Runner Valeri Dietz believes is an indication of how active and giving the community is.
"Starting this business here, Woofers on the Run, has just been an absolute adventure and this town is perfect for it because people are very, very active with their dogs in Traverse City," said Dietz. "They're very supportive of giving back to pet-related organizations. This was just the proof of it, that folks will come out in this kind of weather so that they can donate, and celebrate, and be a part (of it); it was really pretty cool."
If you could not make it to the dog party, but would still like to donate to Stiggy's Dogs, Doggie Stylez Grooming will be accepting gifts through February 1st. Stiggy's is looking for durable toys or treats for training the dogs. Doggie Stylez Grooming is located at 729 E. 8th St. in Traverse City.
