Tue, 02 Apr 2013 16:21:06 GMT — Millions of dollars have been set aside by President Barack Obama for brain research. Early Tuesday, the President introduced a $100 million plan that will come out of the 2014 budget. The BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies) Initiative provides funding to help fund research. The research will be focused on new ways to treat, cure and prevent brain disorders. Some of the disorders that will be studied are Autism, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, among other brain disorders. Today is World Autism Awareness Day. This announcement is timed perfectly as many people are holding awareness events throughout the country including some here in northern Michigan.
Many around the region will "Light it up Blue" for autism awareness. The national campaign encourages people to wear blue in support of autism research.
The Mackinac Bridge will be lit up blue for the entire month of April.
Coming up at 6, Nathan Edwards will have more on what the president's initiative means for northern Michigan.
