Baseball team's home opener is 3 months after fire

Just a few months after a fire, the West Michigan Whitecaps opened their season Tuesday night.

A Michigan minor league baseball team has honored firefighters at its home opener, which comes three months after a blaze destroyed part of the ballpark.

A blustery wind blew under partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-50s Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Ballpark, home to the West Michigan Whitecaps. It's in Kent County's Plainfield Township, near Grand Rapids.

The single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers hosts the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Reconstruction efforts at the park have given the home team a larger, relocated souvenir shop, a new administrative building with a rooftop grill deck and an expanded clubhouse.

Fire investigators say a trash container placed next to a space heater caused the fire. No one was hurt.
