The Traverse City Beach Bums scored runs in four straight innings to build a four-run lead and then fended off a late rally from the Frontier Greys to earn a 5-4 victory on Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.
TC jumped out on top in the third on an unusual play. With runners at the corners and two outs, Frontier pitcher Devon Pearson attempted to pick Greg Harisis off first. Harisis got in a rundown long enough to allow Jeff DeBlieux to steal home, making it 1-0. It was the start of a great night for DeBlieux, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the fourth inning, Josh Miller reached on a two-out error and promptly scored on an RBI single from Chris Cowell to up the lead to 2-0.
Will Rankin pitched the eighth and ninth innings, stranding a pair of runners in the ninth, to earn his fourth save of the season.
Phillips (3-6) posted another solid outing for Traverse City, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.
