A night after Traverse City and River City combined for 23 runs and 29 hits, the pitchers took control as the Rascals eked out a 3-2 victory over the Beach Bums on Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park.
Traverse City finally got to rookie Ben Bracewell in the last of the seventh inning, knocking him out of the game after a Sean Gusrang double scored Josh Miller. After a strikeout, pinch-hitter Kevin Taylor lined an RBI single to right off of Chandler Jagodzinki to draw the Beach Bums to within 3-2.
Rankin and D.J. Johnson retired the eight Rascals to open the door for a potential Beach Bums comeback in the last of the ninth. Yazy Arbelo led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second before being lifted for pinch-runner Drew Rossi, who moved to third on a deep fly out. River City closer Gabriel Shaw then buckled down to strike out Rob Benedict to end the game.
