Petoskey boys win 7th straight downhill ski championship
EMMET COUNTY -- Do you remember anything important that happened back in 2011? The Petoskey Northmen downhill ski program does.
That was the first year the boys won a state championship and they've won again and again each and every year, including the 2017 Division 2 title on Monday afternoon at Boyne Highlands.
Petoskey won comfortably over second place Great Northern Alpine co-op and third place Harbor Springs. Mitch Makela led the Northmen with an individual state championship (1:00.31) in the slalom event. Cadillac's Alex Netzley captured the individual crown (56.91) in the giant slalom. Harbor Springs finished third overall in the girls race.
In the Division 1 state finals across the street at Nub's Nob, Traverse City Central finished runner-up to Marquette in both the boys and girls races. Traverse City West finished third overall in the girls race.
