LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Platte River Campground inside the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is being nationally recognized.
USA Today recently ranked it the fourth-best campground in America for 2021.
The campground is located within walking distance from Lake Michigan and the Platte River.
Park Rangers said there are endless outdoor recreation opportunities right outside of the campground, including hiking, biking, kayaking and fishing.
The location can host RV’s, tents and even backcountry campers.
There are 179 sites and roughly 500 people camp there each night.
Park rangers said they are thrilled but not surprised by the honor.
“People discover this place and then it becomes their favorite campground and they just come back year after year,” said Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore park ranger Merrith Baughman. “It’s really gratifying to know this is where people decide to spend their vacation. Vacation time is precisions.”
Baughman said they enjoy being able to provide a special place for people to visit, relax, and have fun.
“That’s what we are here for, to have fun,” said Baughman.
The Platte River Campground beat out campgrounds in Colorado, Florida, California and more.
