U.P. Salvation Army raises funds to serve community all year

The Sault Ste Marie Salvation Army started their Red Kettle Drive to raise funds for the whole year.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- You've probably seen bell-ringers out collecting donations for the Salvation Army's most important fundraiser of the year.

The Red Kettle Drive raises funds for the entire year.

The Sault Ste. Marie chapter of the Salvation Army serves people in its soup kitchen all year.

The Holiday season is their busiest time of the year when they serve about 90 people a day.

The Salvation Army also has a food pantry for people to take home food.

During the Holidays the Soo chapter also collects toys for its "Toyshop," to provide Christmas presents for those in need.

Capt. Daniel Voss of the Salvation Army said this time of year is rewarding.

"It is my favorite time of the year. It's also sometimes the most difficult time of the year," Voss said. "The hours get long, but again the return on the investment of the hours we put in is wonderful, because again, we're celebrating that Christmas season, the birth of Christ with everyone in our community."

The Salvation Army in Sault Ste Marie served Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac counties.

More than 130 people were served at this year's Thanksgiving community meal.

To help out the Salvation Army this Holiday season, you can donate to the Red Kettle Drive either online or at one the actual kettles.

You can also donate to their toy drive.
