Zonta works to combat Human Trafficking

LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) --Human Trafficking is modern day slavery and January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Zonta is global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. There's a chapter in Traverse City.

Below are ways both Zonta International and Zonta Club of Traverse City work to combat human trafficking.

Zonta International

1.Committed $1 million from 2016-2018 to help women and girls in Nepal.

2.Partnered with Soroptimists to create education and awareness.

3.Created advocacy campaign, Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women.

4.Work with United Nations and Council of Europe.

Zonta Club of Traverse City

1.Established an advocacy committee aimed at reducing violence against women and girls.

2.Co-sponsored a Human Trafficking film at NMC.

3.Held program meeting to educate our members on what sexual harassment looks like.

4.“Zonta Say No” marches

5.Provide grants to programs that support strong, independent girls.
