A resource through a northern Michigan health system is aiming to connect patients with medical care they need. Munson Healthcare HealthLink is a navigating system and it's all in the palm of your hand.
Finding a primary care physician or even a specialist can be a challenge especially when you don't know where to begin. That's where the confidential service HealthLink comes into play.
"Munson HealthLink is essentially a patient engagement center where we are navigating patients to healthcare needs. Many times if they don't call us we are working withing hospitals to make sure we are transitioning patients appropriately before and after they're discharged," says Munson HealthLink manager, Jacquie Harding.
Harding and her team are the navigators connecting people to vital Munson Healthcare services.
"If they're not established with a current primary we make sure we set them up with a physician that's accepting their insurance and close to home," says Harding.
For people without insurance, there's a solution to that as well.
"HealthLink schedules appointments for uninsured patients to sit down with certified application counselors and these are people specifically trained to set uninsured people through the application process to find out if they're eligible," says Harding.
Bob Carr and his wife, Karen split their time living between Traverse City and Mackinac Island. He credits their vegetarian diet and active lifestyle to staying healthy and out of the hospital, but a sudden accident had the Carrs turning to HealthLink back in July.
"My wife was healthy but she fell, broke her hip, and also her arm. We never had a family physician so it was time. We called HealthLink and it was amazing," says Carr.
Carr said they thought it would take several days to find a specialist for his wife, Karen's injuries, but once he called HealthLink they were able to have appointments set up in just a couple of days.
"It took a falling and being in pretty bad shape to wake us up," says Carr.
"What my non-clinical amazing team does is heck or high water find the answer and get the patient to a resolution and the care they need. We are absolutely a confidential service. We gather certain points of information from the patient. We track our conversations so we can pick right up where we left off from the last call," says Harding.
