Audiologists weigh in on Yanny Vs. Laurel debate
(WPBN/WGTU) -- If you've been on social media at all in the last day, there is good chance you have seen a debate take place over an audio clip.
The recording of a voice saying one word has gone viral with the question being, is it saying Laurel or Yanny?
The only thing that is clear is that no one can agree and professionals say it's hard to pin down a scientific reason why you might hear one or the other.
It originates from Vocabulary.com of an automated voice saying Laurel.
“Whether they're listening to it on headphones or their phone or their PC, all those things can influence the sound,” said Dr. Kate Sawhill.
Sawhill is an audiologist at Hearing Solutions in Traverse City, she says it can sound different based on the high and low frequencies of the recording itself.
“So the two words that people are hearing have, to some extent, similar amounts of acoustic energy and so again I think they may be manipulated that word mechanically so it's right on the edge of one word versus the other and that's were all having some differences,” said Sawhill.
