Benzie Area Historical Museum features vitage summer exhibits and bus tour

BENZIE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Northern Michigan is known as a summer destination, but could you imagine what a northern Michigan summer was like in the early 1900’s?

To help give you a good idea, the Benzie Area Historical Museum has an exhibit called Summer Fun in the Benzie Sun, which displays an old fashioned 1914 sailboat, swimsuits, golf clubs, outfits and more.

The museum is also featuring another new photography exhibit.

The exhibit is of W.H. Sharp’s work who was a Benzie and southern Leelanau counties photographer in the early 1900’s.

The W.H. Sharp exhibit features dozens of photos he took, from outdoor photos, sleeping bear dunes, Lake Michigan, his family and more.

Another interesting new exhibit is the Lost Schools exhibit, which features old class composites and letterman jackets from Benzie County in the early 1900’s.

“We have cataloged over 18,000 items here at this museum,” said Barbara Mort, executive director. “It’s a great place to come and learn about family history. We appreciate a call in advance, so that we make sure we have a researcher available. We have very talented researchers, archivists and genealogists to volunteer their time regularly.”

The museum also features the Magical History Bus Tours taking guests on a brief tour of the museum and on then on the road for a trip around Benzie County for a historical tour.
