Benzie Co. student in custody after school threat
BENZIE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Benzie County student is in a juvenile detention center after deputies said he made a threat against a school.
An investigation into the Frankfort High School student began after deputies were contacted by school staff, parents and students.
Sheriff Ted Schendel said the student has been taken into custody and the case has been sent to the prosecutor.
The sheriff encourages parents, teachers, and administrators to be vigilant and transparent when it comes to school safety.
“I’m going to encourage them to contact us directly if they feel there is a threat out there and see they are the eyes and ears in that school, [law enforcement] is not there every day,” Schendel said. “If they are concerned and have a gut feeling something is wrong we want to hear about it so we can do the proper investigation, I think that’s the least we can do to protect our children.”
Details are limited because the investigation is still ongoing.
School administrators have received complaints from parents about not being notified of this investigation.
School officials said they took proper steps and will notify parents immediately when there is a serious threat or lockdown.
