Big Rapids Library seeks park and learning experience expansion
MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A community in Mecosta County could soon see a new park and community area.
Staff at the Big Rapids Community Library hope to make a special park outside the walls of the library building.
“We want to build a literacy playground adjacent to the library,” said Lauren Moran, the director of the library. “There is right now, a community garden out there, along with some very old playground equipment and the space could really be more useful for the library and the community.”
The project is still in the preliminary phase.
The outdoor park would include updated playground equipment, larger community garden, and several hands-on learning education stations.
“We will have a great literacy playground for kids and for families it really focuses on bridging the gap between play and learning,” said Tirzah Price, a library assistant. “We also have a lot of really great green spaces for people of all ages to just enjoy the park with more benches and hammocks and seating as well as our community gardens.”
Right now the plans also include nearly two dozen parking spots.
The hope is to also allow the library to hold more events and learning opportunities for kids.
“We hope to bring people to the vicinity of the library, and allow us to expand our programming outdoors hopefully to attract more people to read and relax and play and meet new people in the community,” Moran said.
The project they have plans for right now will cost more than $300,000.
Staff say frequent visitors of to the library are excited and hopeful for the plans.
“The people are really excited because, about just using our extensive lawn space," Price said.
Right now the director and staff are working with the City to determine if the plans will work and where funding will come from.
