Cheboygan's Maybank brings trophy home from Augusta
CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Many will be sitting at home this weekend watching their favorite golfers compete in the Masters this weekend, but one northern Michigan local has already won big this week in Augusta.
Twelve-year-old P.J. Maybank, from Cheboygan, won the annual Drive Chip and Putt competition for his age group.
The qualifying starts with about 50,000 young golfers competing in several qualifiers.
Ten of them from each age group can go to Augusta.
After the driving and chipping part of the competition, P.J. was four points behind the leader and knew he had a chance to win it with a couple of good putts.
He putted close enough to earn himself the trophy for the the 12 to 13-year-old group.
This is the second time Maybank competed in the tournament and says he has always dreamed of playing at Augusta.
“It meant a lot to me, because all of the best players in the world and best players of all time have all played there before," Maybank said. "And, to see my name up on the leader board was pretty cool.”
While it's snowing in northern Michigan, Maybank practices down in Florida.
He will start the qualifying process for next year's Drive Chip and Putt in late June.
Josh Lavely of Kewadin finished second in the boys 14 to 15 age group.
