Cherry Capital Airport awarded 'Airport of the Year' in Michigan
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Cherry Capital Airport’s runway extension project is being recognized in a big way.
The airline has officially been awarded ‘Airport of the Year’ by MDOT-AERO.
The award was given for the outstanding efforts associated with the rehabilitation and extension of Runway 10/28 in 2017.
The extension project allows for bigger planes to carry more passengers at Cherry Capital Airport.
“The community is seeing the seats in the airliners full, we are also seeing new airliners interested in the market,” said Kevin Klein, Cherry Capital Airport director. “For the first time this summer we will have two main line carriers in Traverse City because of the runway extension and improvements.”
The airport also broke passenger number records in 2017.
Airport leaders say 2017 passenger numbers surpassed the record-breaking ones from 2016 by 5.6 percent.
