GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The federal government has awarded nearly $1.5 million for upgrades to the Traverse City airport.

Cherry Capital Airport was given a $1.47 million grant as part of $659.8 million in airport infrastructure grants given to airports across the county by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money is a reimbursement for upgrades to the runway lights put in during the runway expansion in 2017.

This grant is part of the Airport Improvement Program through the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The annual grant is funded by the taxes collected on airline tickets.
