Cleanups planned for beaches along all five Great Lakes
MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) -- In an effort to fight against plastic pollution in the Great Lakes, thousands of volunteers will be cleaning up beaches Saturday.
Adopt-A-Beach cleanups on all five Great Lakes are scheduled as part of the annual day of action.
According to the Alliance for the Great Lakes, 85 percent of litter on our lakes' beaches is plastic and nearly 22 million pound enters the lakes every year.
Last year at the "Adopt-A-Beach" events more than 6,300 volunteers picked up around 11,000 pounds of trash at 240 beaches.
Event times vary by location and if you're interested in helping out you can visit their website www.greatlakesadopt.org.
