Coast Guard rescues sailor run aground in Lake Superior
KEWEENAW COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Coast Guard crew rescued a man after his sail boat ran aground Saturday morning off the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
A "mayday" distress signal call came in around 5:30 a.m. Saturday from a 73-year-old man who said he had run aground on rocks near Manitou Island in Lake Superior, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
A crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City launched a helicopter and around 8:35 a.m. a rescue swimmer was able to lift the man to safety, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard is reminding everyone to have working electronic position indicating beacons, life jackets, distress flares, VHF radios and a float plan before heading out on the water
