Community mourns the loss of local woman killed in house fire
LAKE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The community is mourning the loss of an elderly woman who made a major impact in the Lake County community.
Thursday, fire crews found the body of 79-year-old Evelyn Ware beneath the rubble of her home. It happened near Lakota Road near East Old M-63 after a fire broke out around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.
“We were told that one person possibly inside and when we got here Leroy was on scene and it was fully engulfed,” said Luther Fire Chief Donald Nixon.
“She was well known in the community, she lived here a long time,” Nixon said.
Evelyn was a long time employee with Pine River Schools transportation department.
“She was bus supervisor and I actually took over her bus route, she was a nice person, easy to get a long with,” Kevin Wanstead said.
“She worked for the bus garage for lots of years and she was very well loved,” said Le Roy resident Julie Peterson.
The 79-year-old also worked for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as part of their mounted division.
“I worked for the school for lots of years after I graduated and she just kind of, she was always nice and polite,” Peterson said.
Family and friends say she lived in her home for nearly six decades.
Right now the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
