County jail undergoing minor remodel
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A remodel of the Grand Traverse County Jail is one step closer to becoming a reality.
County commissioners approved a construction contract that converts existing space inside the jail into office space.
According to Sheriff Tom Bensley, the goal is to give more space to Community Mental Health workers and to medical staff.
Bensley says it's a minor remodel that began a few weeks ago.
"We're trying to provide more mental health services for inmates in jail. It's a needed service and we're working with Community Mental Health to try and get a contract where they would provide two mental health personnel for treatment and care of inmates in jail," said Bensley.
Bensley hopes that the construction will be completed in the next couple of weeks.
He says the cost is around $40,000.
