Deadline approaches for Tight Lines for Troops fishing tournament

Organizers say they’re also in need of volunteers.

MANISTEE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The deadline to apply for the annual Tight Lines for Troops event is only a few weeks away.

Through community support, the fishing tournament allows veterans from across the state to hit the open water on Lake Michigan from Manistee and cast a few lines for free.

Applications are accepted until March 1, 2018.

Last year more than 250 veterans went out on more than 50 charter boats.

“We’re just trying to get new veterans out, especially world war two veterans throughout the state John Stocki, a board member with the event said. "We’re just trying to get the word out for them to come in and experience this for those who never fished or can’t afford it or for whatever reason we will make it happen for them we’ll get a bus, whatever needs to happen we’ll will get them here.”

This year’s event is May 18th and 19th.

Organizers say they’re also in need of volunteers to help with the event as well as the ceremony after the fishing trip. A welcome back celebration honors the veterans, thanking them for their service is waiting the veterans.

In the last nine years, Tight Lines for Troops has raised more than $50,000 for veteran organizations in Michigan.

More than 2,000 veterans have participated in the event.

A raffle will be held as well after the fishing tournament Saturday. Any remaining funds from sponsors will go to veteran support organizations.
