SAGINAW TONWSHIP, Mich. --A beloved family pet is dead following a pit bull attack in Saginaw Township.

It happened at PetSmart on Tittabawassee Road on Tuesday, July 3 just before 2 p.m., according to Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald F. Pussehl.

The pit bull attacked a beagle, and the pit bull's owner eventually separated the two dogs. As she intervened, her pit bull bit her in the hand.

The beagle's owner took her wounded animal to a veterinary clinic located within the store, but the veterinarian couldn’t save the dog.

Both dogs were on leashes.

The pit bull had been properly licensed and was current with its vaccinations, Pussehl said, and the owner was ticketed for violating the township's vicious dog ordinance.

Here is a statement from PetSmart Senior Manager, Public Relations Melissa Wenzel:

"We were made aware of an unfortunate dog altercation that occurred outside of our Saginaw store on Tuesday, July 3. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Gretta as a result of the incident that took place in the parking lot and our thoughts are with her pet parents during this difficult time."
