Deputies searching for answers in fatal hit-and-run on Drummond Island

Deputies are searching for answers in a fatal hit-and-run on Drummond Island.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Deputies are searching for whoever is responsible for a hit-and-run crash that left a 71-year-old man dead on the road next to his campsite.

Campers said most people were asleep when a vehicle hit and killed Thomas Gibbons on Waters Street on Drummond Island.

Todd Hendrix, who was camping next to the victim, was shocked something like this could happen.

"It's a quiet little campground," Hendrix said. "People are here mostly to fish and hang out. Lots of families, little kids running around and stuff, you thought it was a real safe area."

Chippewa County Sheriff's Deputies have been on the island asking people questions.

It's not clear if deputies think the person responsible is still on the island.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (906) 635-6387 or (906) 495-3312.
