GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- In April and May, the state of Michigan recorded a 43% increase in overdoses, according to the Addiction Treatment Services in Traverse City.
On Wednesday, ATS's The Porch and Traverse City Downtown Development Authority came together to hold a Narcan distribution and education program.
Business owners and employees learned how to use the Narcan kits.
They also each received one to use in case of emergency.
Each kit includes two doses, gloves, alcohol prep and an instruction card.
Narcan kits are typical $140.
"This effort is really a community effort to build a safety net. to know that they can look around and find one of these little pink Ns on the front of a business and know that there is a Narcan kit there and they can respond immediately to this overdose and there is a drug that will literally save lives," said Porch Recovery Center Manager Matthew Zerilli.
Zerilli said The Porch will provide any downtown business with a Narcan kit if they want one.
