Event to benefit Coast Guard members as government shutdown lingers on
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- As the shutdown carries on, several people in Traverse City are coming together to help Coast Guard members get by.
While funds were secured to pay the Coast Guard through 2018, any paychecks for the rest of the shutdown are still in question.
Freshwater Events along with the VFW Cherryland Post are hosting a fundraiser Saturday at Hotel Indigo in Traverse City.
While Coast Guard members can't accept cash, the money donated will go towards heating assistance, medical assistance, rent and other critical needs.
“I’ve been hearing from Coast Guard families of what they're enduring, and it just shouldn't be,” said event organizer, M’Lynn Hartwell. “We're a very generous community and this is an opportunity for us to show the Coast Guard how much we love them.”
The event is taking place Saturday, doors open at 6 p.m. at Hotel Indigo in Traverse City.
There will be live music throughout the night.
People can donate with cash, check or credit card.
If you can’t make it to the event but would like to help, you can go to their website.
