Great Lakes Captains pack Great Wolf Lodge for Industry Days
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The men and women who work on the Great Lakes are taking over The Great Wolf Lodge.
More than 100 people are at this year's Great Lakes Captains Association's Industry Days.
It started Tuesday and will go into Wednesday.
One of the topics: the impact a new Soo Lock will have on the industry.
"The impact of that is gonna be felt the greatest when something goes wrong with the old lock," said Bob Schallip, the President of the Great Lakes Captains Association. "80 percent of freights cannot be hailed through there. So, we do need desperately that second lock to back up the first lock at the same time.
State and federal money will be used to pay for the new lock project.
Michigan is kicking in $52 million to fund design work and portion of the channel deepening.
